The Sun - The LBD

I had the great pleasure of contributing to a fashion article in The Sun online newspaper, this week.
Our topic of choice? Brown – one of this season hottest colours.

Here’s a snapshot of our discussion:

Why do you think celebrities such as Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have embraced the brown dress trend? It’s a luxurious, softer alternative to black. Sure the LBD (Little Black Dress) will always be at the forefront of style but as a relative newcomer the LBD (Little Brown Dress) is set to become a real wardrobe staple. It’s sexy but with a softer edge, evoking thoughts of chocolate, coffee and after dinner soirées. It whispers the very current trend of quiet luxury.

What are some of the benefits of wearing the color brown e.g. is it slimming, flatter all skin tones?
Brown in its many forms suits most skin tones, it’s just a case of picking the right shade for you. If in doubt layer brown with a colour that does suit you and put that colour, right next to your skin. Brown also pairs brilliantly with so many different colours from pastel lemon to cerise pink, it’s a beautiful, warm, neutral.

Do you think the color brown will replace the popular little black dress?
No, I don’t think anything will ever totally replace the Little Black Dress because so many women have come to rely on it year after year, throughout recent history. It’s the perfect ’I have nothing to wear’ piece, in a colour we can all depend on. But, I do think brown has a place right next to it in our wardrobes.

Which fashion brands and High Street stores (available in the US) do you think are doing the color well at the moment?
My favourite high street store for look, quality & price point is COS.COM. They have some beautiful wool tailored trousers and a pure cashmere crew neck available right now that are to die for – they’re giving The Row vibes at 10% of the price. The quality of the fabric used, rivals those of higher end brands and their pieces are available at a fraction of the cost.

How would you recommend styling the colour brown? Personally, I love brown as a full colour blocked look. I think thats why we all love the full length Saint Laurent vibe. There’s something uber lux about wearing one colour, head to toe. But if that isn’t for you, try pairing it with other neutrals, white, grey, cream, beige or add some colour and try it with burgundy, red (two more shades of the season) orange, baby blue, navy blue or black.

What tips would you give to people who don’t want to wear the colour head-to-toe?
If the idea of brown as a head to toe look scares you a little, ease yourself in with a just one piece. I would usually recommend that you pick a gorgeous cashmere knit or a scarf even, perfect for this time of year. All you need is one hero piece to work it into your existing wardrobe and try to make it work with at least 5 other outfits you already own.

Is there anything to be mindful of when wearing the colour brown that can look bad? Be mindful that it might not suit you worn next to your skin but don’t let that put you off the colour altogether. I see so many clients that have had their colours done and shy away from anything not specified as ‘their colour’. If you want to wear it, go for it. Just make sure you put a colour that does suit you, next to your skin.

Anything else that you would like to add?
Try your best to be a sustainable shopper and don’t impulse buy or purchase trends just because they are ‘in’. The best thing you can do for your wallet and the environment is consider your purchases. If something new comes into your wardrobe think about selling something that is longer needed. Recycle your cash. It’s a great way to stay current without blowing your budget.
